There is much expectation from today’s meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Bibian Anekwe News understands.
The year 2020 is about coming to an end Nigerian university students have been shut out of school for the past 9 months.
However, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, stated on Monday, December 21 that the government had reached 98 per cent of the university association’s demands. A development which according to Ngige could bring the lingering strike to an end in January 2021.
The minister noted that academic activities in the nation’s tertiary institutions could resume early next year should the two parties reach a good end today, December 22. Ngige revealed this during the launch of Ngige free medical outreach at the Community Health Center in Alor, Idemili South local government area of Anambra State on Monday, Bibian Anekwe News understands.
While Nigerian University students await the outcome of today’s meeting, three things should be expected:
The possible call off of the lingering strike action if things go well
A possible meeting rescheduling if a further check is needed
Continuation of the strike as a result of phase II of COVID-19 pandemic
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday evening, 21st December 2020, confirmed 356 new cases of Coronavirus disease infection in Nigeria, Bibian Anekwe News reports
The new cases of COVID-19 infection were confirmed via a statement on the official Twitter handle of the health agency.
