Societal growth and greatness is often determined by the means and manners it’s government has taken the issues of the security and safety of it’s citizens very seriously. While it is often assumed and rightly so, that government primarily exists to ensure that the citizens welfare and security for the stimulation of economic growth is assured, it is equally heart wrenching to observe that most governments have often misapplied it’s priorities towards enthroning ideals of good governance that would impact positively on the masses. It is important to underscore the importance of safety and security of lives and property of the citizens as a catalyst for sustainable development and socio-economic growth.
Fire incidences have recently become a burgeoning occurrence in the state and elsewhere. In the past few months, there are reported incidences of fire outbreak in critical government facilities as well as other public and privately owned infrastructural facilities. The harmful effects of fire ravages in the aforementioned places is better imagined, than experienced.
Bugged by the devastating potentials of fire in public and private facilities, the proactive governor of Enugu state, Rt. Honorable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in furtherance of his good governance initiative to impact his environment positively initiated actions to curb both the incidences of fire outbreak and it’s concomitant effects on the economy. It must also be stated that fires do not just start on their own, so many factors including those of the Arsonists have been largely responsible for fire outbreaks. It is therefore heart warming to observe that the people oriented leadership in Enugu State is not only taking the bull by the horn, but traversing the whole length to preach the gospel of safety and inculcate safety consciousness in the citizens.
The massive sensitization campaign embarked upon by the authorities of the Enugu State fire service to schools and market places identified as vulnerable areas for fire implant is quite impressive. The campaign which largely focused on the causes, precautionary measures to avert fires and what to do when they inevitably happens is a reflection of a well bred leadership powered by Gburu-Gburu.
The realization that fire incidents had sent so many business men and women into the poverty line with no hope of redemption and destroyed critical government infrastructures, caused humongous traumas to victims of fire, the authorities have penciled down about 294 secondary schools across the state to benefit from the fire safety management measures. Gov. Ugwuanyi also approved the installation of fire extinguishers in primary and secondary schools in the State. The operation will begin with 216 units of 6kg DCP for 18 secondary schools in the six educational zones in the state. In addition, the administration further distributed fire extinguishers to 24 major markets and to other 78 members of liquefied gas dealers association as well as installations of fire extinguishers in all the government properties in the State.
Credit must also be extended to the astute leadership of the fire authorities powered by Engr. Okwudili Ohaa who deftly revamped the Enugu fire service as service driven agency of government. Greater credit yet, to the people driven leader, governor Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi who spotted the technocrat to crystallize many of his people oriented visions for Ndi Enugu.
